Renewal

These are three pictures I've submitted for the Seachange Arts open exhibition on the theme of renewal. The exhibition will be taking place from 12 to 14 April in the refurbished Great Yarmouth Library gallery.

My take on this submission has been a pretty straightforward one of urban renewal, taking two images from my trip to Lisbon two years ago and one very recent one from Great Yarmouth. I've always been interested in photographing street scenes, especially looking for the conjunction of stret art and posters with human interest. The second of these amused me because it shows street art of a workman painting over....street art. The final one is a little difrerent but I quite liked the strong image of the refurbished postbox at the St George's Chapel revevelopment site.

Dungeness

Time spent at Dungeness is never wasted. A week ago I braved the bitterly cold winds to spend an hour walking around parts of the village around the shingle bank and in sight of the power station, the two lighthouses, and the myriad of cottages, shacks, huts, containers, boats and all sorts of beachside oddities and detritus. This is an important ecological site, one of the largest expanses of shingle in the world, It also has the southerly terminus of the narrow gauge Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch railway. I took a few shots of the iconic cottage where the artist Derek Jarman used to live. It's a bleak but fascinating part of the Kent coast, that would repay a longer visit. If only it had been warmer.

Lanzarote

We visited Lanzarote last November on our cruise of the Canaries and Madeira, and here are a few pictures I took with my Canon Ixus compact camera on the coach tour around the north east of the island. It was a beautiful day, fairly typical of the days we spent visiting some of the different islands. I prefer to travel independently, so taking an organised excursion did feel a little strange and I would have liked more time at some places and less time at others.

Norwich medieval churches: the exhibition

The exhibition based on last year's photography competition on the theme of Norwich's medieval churches is well and truly up and running - it's in The Forum in Norwich till the first weekend in March. I was lucky enough to have one of my entries shortlisted for the exhibition - though it failed to win the category prize - and along with Teresa I went along to Monday's exhibition launch evening. Some of the picures will apparently be included in a book on Norwich's churches due to be published in April. I'm including a few shots here that I took on the camera phone.

Duxford aviation museum

I was fortunate two weeks ago to have an opportunity for a quick look around the aviation museum at Duxford (http://www.duxford.iwm.org.uk/), with a wonderful collection of fighter planes and bombers...and a Concorde. There were quite a few display boards dealing with aviation history, and a few copies of Biggles stories (see below). As I only had my camera phone with me this time, the opportunities were a little limited but I still came up with some pleasing results.

London street markets

I've long been a fan of vibrant and interesting street markets, and last week in London I was able to call at two - Whitecross Street, a favourite since I discovered it a few months ago, and Exmouth Street. Here are a few photographs from each, all taken on my camera phone.
